Charlton Athletic are delighted to confirm the permanent signing of Senegal international Pape Souaré.
The 31-year-old left-back becomes Charlton’s 12th signing of the summer.
Souaré began training with Nigel Adkins’ side last week and impressed the Addicks’ hierarchy, resulting in him signing a one-year contract, subject to international clearance, with Charlton on Monday.
Capped 22 times for Senegal, Souaré is excited by the opportunity to join the Addicks. He said: “I’m very, very happy to be here. I’ve been training for a few days. The welcome and the love from the players and staff around the club, makes me feel very good and happy. I can’t wait to get playing.”
Owner Thomas Sandgaard said: “We’ve been looking at our options to get another left back in and I’m really pleased we’ve been able to sign someone of Pape’s quality. He has played at the top level in France and England as well as international games for Senegal, so I’m looking forward to seeing him in a Charlton shirt.”
Souaré played for Diambars, before joining Lille where he made 53 appearances in Ligue 1, including four games during Lille’s Ligue 1 title-winning season in 2010/11. In 2012/13 he played 23 times in Ligue 1 in a loan spell at Reims. He joined Crystal Palace in 2014, playing 48 Premier League games. During that spell Souaré was airlifted to hospital in 2016 after being involved in a road accident and managed to return to the Senegal national team in 2018. He joined Troyes for the 2019/20 season, playing 17 games.
