Matty Godden praised the entire Charlton squad following the Addicks' excellent 1-0 win over table toppers Birmingham City.

The forward netted the all-important winner in the 54th minute as Nathan Jones' side condemned Blues to their first league defeat of the season.

“We got the 1-0 win that I said we needed,” explained Godden. “I thought we were outstanding from minute one, we limited them to absolutely nothing. At the end of the day we could have had a couple more.

“My first goal here was at the away end, so it was nice to score in front of the Covered End so I could celebrate in front of them all.”

Despite going into the contest on the back of three consecutive defeats, Godden insisted that heads did not drop amongst the camp.

He said: “The dressing room is really positive. We have had a tough 10 days, but I said to the boys that you get them in football. It’s about how you react and bounce back. A win on the other side of the international break will see us where we deserve to be. I thought we were outstanding and deserved the win today.

“With all the hype around the Birmingham situation and all the talk, I thought we limited them to absolutely nothing. We went after them - there was no sitting back and catching them on the counter.

“We kept clean sheets at the start of the season, and we probably needed another one for everyone. From the press, the midfield and then the defenders, everyone was outstanding.”

The striker highlighted the superb support from the Charlton faithful once again.

“After the game you could feel a difference in comparison to the two other wins we had here. Everyone was together and that's what you need as a club. It's important that we all pull in the same direction to achieve the goal.”
