Charlton Women continued their remarkable form with a fourth consecutive victory this past Sunday, extending their unbeaten streak. After the 2-0 triumph over Blackburn Rovers, manager Karen Hills reflected on the performance and the challenges posed by their opponents.
Hills acknowledged the toughness of the match, saying: “It was a game we knew was going to be tough. You always know when you come up to Blackburn that it's going to be a different challenge. We knew what they were going to be about, that they were going to sit in and try and frustrate us, and we had to find different ways to try and break that down.”
Discussing the first half, Hills was full of praise for her squad's approach, adding, “I thought first half we were fantastic. We worked so hard this week on different variations, getting in and beyond, and I thought we did that really well. The intensity we played at, the speed, and the quality shone through, and it was a really dominant first half.”
While Charlton entered the second half with a 2-0 lead, Hills noted the shift in Blackburn’s tactics: “We knew the second half was always going to be different and that they were going to come out. 2-0 is a great score to have, but at the same time, you have to come out and perform again. We knew they might do something different, and I think we fell into their trap a little bit.”
Despite a challenging second half, Hills credited her squad’s resilience, highlighting the contributions from the substitutes: “The game changers that came on helped us get over the line, and we ground out the result.”
Hills expressed pride in her players' performances and noted the importance of maintaining momentum with a busy week ahead. She concluded, “Four wins out of four – I'm super proud of them”.
Looking at the week ahead, Karen shared: "We got a big week, which is now about recovering and then we have the league cup game on Wednesday which is an opportunity to play against a WSL team which were looking forward to!"
