Mike Ammann visits Sparrows Lane

Former Addick Mike Ammann recently returned to Sparrows Lane and took a trip down memory lane with Charlton legend Steve Brown.

The American goalkeeper joined Charlton in 1994 following a successful trial and featured 31 times for the club.

“It brings back so many good memories,” said Ammann. “It’s nice to see that things have changed and grown, but it still feels the same - the heart of the club is still here which is nice.

“The sand pit that Bob Bolder used to make me dive around in is no longer there which is disappointing as it was a historical sight!"

The club carried out major improvements over the course of the summer at Sparrows Lane, and Ammann was impressed with the developments.

“I remember our gym, which I never used, was just big enough for Keith Peacock to do his dips," he laughed. "Now they have a full-on facility.

“Charlton was my first time as a professional, learning a new culture in a new country and a new passion for the sport as well as the characters. Not just the players, but the staff and the supporters as well, it was very family-oriented."

Brown, who chairs the club’s new-look Ex-Players’ Association alongside Kevin Lisbie, accompanied Ammann as they toured the facilities and watched the men's first-team train.

“I’ve been spending time with an old teammate in Steve Brown," explained the 53-year-old. "We have a lot of similarities, not just between the two of us but our families, our wives and kids. Over the years we became closer and closer - the similarities and conversations that we have about the game and about life... we became very close.

“I’ve always stayed involved as a fan of the club, following the results, now following online and watching the games."
